LVNAE

The name LVNAE is inspired by the town of Luni, an ancient Etruscan and Greek port, consecrated to the goddess Selene by the Greeks (Luna, for the Romans). The first Luna settlement was founded by the Romans in 177 B.C LNVAE Dosoni wine production is rooted in the ancient history of this land and its people, the Etruscans, Greeks and Romans, from whom it has inherited a great winemaking tradition.

In Etruria victory goes to the wines of Luni..”  This phrase, from Plin o the Elder’s masterpiece “Naturalis Historia”, reveals that the wines of Colli di Luni were already well-known during the era of the ancient Roman empire (65 A.D.)

The area of Colli di Luni is the easternmost corner of the region, lying between the Gulf of La Spezia and the Apuan Alps, only 7 miles from the sea as the crow flies. This privileged position provides a unique microclimate where the alternating action of the sea and mountain breezes, depending on whether it is day and night, creates the perfect conditions for cultivating vines and producing excellent wines.

FAMILY

The Bosoni family are winegrowers that cultivate the wine and produce wines, a family that has preserved the culture of the territory across three generations. LVNAE was built on the dreams and a passion of Paolo Bosoni who in 1966, inherited the family’s land, for generations devoted to agriculture, and switched the focus to wine production. Paolo Bosoni supervises and coordinates the work in the cellar and the vineyards with the help of his brother Lucio.

Antonella Bertolla, Diego Bosoni and Debora Bosoni, Paolo’s wife, son and daughter respectively, are an integral part of LVNAE. Paolo Bosoni core belief is that the quality created in the vineyard can be captured and preserved in the cellars by painstaking and respectful work at all stages of production. The family makes a limited number of bottles because we favour quality over quantity and are always guided by nature and the wealth of expertise of the LVNAE company.

LOCATION

LVNAE is located in Liguria which consists of a narrow strip that extends the border with France to the northern part of Tuscany. Traversed by mountains (the Alps to the west and the Apennines to the east), the entire territory faces the Ligurian Sea. Although geographically part of northern Italy, it enjoys a temperate climate due to the influence of the sea.

Genoa, the main city, is on the dividing line between the Riviera di Ponente and Riviera di Levante. Mountains and steep hills make up 70% of the territory, and there are only two plains: the Albenga plain in the Riviera fi Ponente and the Magra plain in the Riviera di Levante. Around 70% of wine production is concentrated in the Magra plain in the province of La Spezia. Notwithstanding the limited volume of production, Ligurian Wines, especially the whites, are renowned for their elegance and freshness.

LAND

The vineyards lie in the Colli di Luni, from the plain to the south of the river Magra to the Apuan Alps in the province of La Spezia. The last corner of eastern Liguria, bordering with Tuscany.

The unique territory is made up of little pieces of land (none larger than 2 to 3 hectares) are divided among hills, foothills and plains. The Apuan Alps and the mountains give protection from the cold northerly winds, while the sea provides food ventilation and a remarkable temperature range, excellent for the quality and character of the wines.

The composition of the soil is geologically very varied, rich skeletal soil of medium texture in the hills and foothills and clay silt in the plains. The marble of the Apuan, the olive groves, the Mediterranean scrub and the sea and the distinctive features and aromas of the land surrounding our vineyards.

The vineyards are located in the municipalities of Ortonovo and Castelnuovo Magra (La Spezia) and cover an area of 45 hectares. Three of these features experimental vineyards where the properties of traditional vines are studied and developed in collaboration with the Liguria Region and the National Research centre of Turin.

It was decided to completely eliminate the use of herbicides and to use natural fertilizers. The grapes are harvested by hand in little crates. The time for harvesting depends on exposure and the strains cultivated, as well as on the basis of a series of analysis of the bunches and by tasting the grapes, which are then carefully selected.

LVNAE believe in the excellence of the Genius Loci and in the exceptional nature of every single plot and its fruit. That’s why the philosophy is to appreciate and rediscover native vines in order to bring out their maximum quaility. Vermentino is a vine we have always worked with, in the vineyards and the cellar, and they are well aware of the unique properties bestowed by the territory. LVNAE also decided to preserve and plant native vines like Albarola, Vermentino Nero, Malvasia, Pollera Nera and Massareta, aware of the uniqueness of their fruit.
