MORGANTE

Morgante winery was born in Sicily, in the lovely countryside of Grotte, a small city in the southern province of Agrigento, once very well-known for its sulphur mines. This project began as the ambition of a family of agriculturists using the knowledge gained over five generations as grape-growers.

In 1989, Antonio Morgante, with enthusiastic support of his sons Carmelo and Giovanni, decided to vinify his own grapes. This decision represented the beginning of a strong commitment to achieve the best results with the indigenous grape Nero D’Avola, the only endemic red grape variety of great importance in Sicily, which the Morgante family has always grown.

In 1997, a stroke of luck brought renowned oenological consultant Riccardo Cotarella to the winery. With Riccardo, the Morgante family has advanced their agricultural experimentation and refined their vinification techniques with the aim of producing world-class wines from 100% Nero d’Avola grapes.

VINEYARDS

The Morgante family pays particular attention to its consumers’ needs, for this reason, they constantly work to achieve high-quality products.

This dedication is put into action by a continuous and careful manufacturing process, with control from the cultivation stage to the final product, in complete respect of the technical advice and obligations laid down by the national and international existing regulations.

Moreover, for the production of the wines, they avail themselves to the advice of the great oenologist Riccardo Cotarella, with whom they plan continuous improvements of the production techniques.

The family manages a farm of 200 hectares in small plots sowing vineyards, grain, olive trees, and almond trees in the hilly territory.

The plots of land are at altitudes between 350-550 meters above sea level.

The territory lies at a distance of 25 km from the splendid Valley of the Temples of Agrigento.

GEOGRAPHY & NUMBERS

Sicily’s vineyards extend for 350,000 acres, representing 17.5 % of the region’s agricultural surface. It is Italy’s most grape-planted region; Puglia is 2nd with 14.5% and Veneto is 3rd with 9.4%.

Most of the vineyards extend less than 8 acres; among 56,000 producers, only 4,000 have 15 acres or more. Only 455 companies bottle wine here, and more than 50 of them are cooperative cellars.

In 2011, wine production was about 185,000 gallons (almost 48,000 gallons are classified IGT and DOC). White wines represent the majority, with 70% of the total production coming from the Trapani area.

In the last years, the percentage of white-grape vineyards has decreased from 75% in 2000 to 66% in 2012. On the other hand, there is an increase of varietals such as the iconic Nero D’Avola.

Agrigento, the home of Morgante, is the 2° most planted province in Sicily.

The most planted grapes are: Catarrato 33.21%, Nero d’Avola 15.82%, Trebbiano toscano 7.16%, Inzolia 6.66%, Grecanico 4.53%, Syrah 4.35%, Merlot 4.05%, Chardonnay 4.02%, Cabernet Sauvignon 3.29%.
